Leadership
Strength, accountability, and responsibility. Leadership skills are key in school, future jobs, and many other aspects of life.
Utilizing my Premiere Pro and digital design skills, I often helped my classmates improve and learn how to use different editing programs.
Whether a quick FaceTime or designing something for someone’s podcast, I was always thrilled that my classmates looked to me for help. To the right is a podcast cover I design for my friend Austin Li.
For the 2022-23 school year I was selected to be an editor for ScotCenter, peer-reviewing others’ podcasts, critiquing them, and grading them. I enjoyed this task the whole school year and really connected well with my fellow podcasters!
I often graded podcasts on a rubric based on a plethora of subjects like audio quality, intro quality, feature photo and etc. I used my pre-existing knowledge on podcasting and Premiere Pro to help others navigate it and improve their overall podcast quality.
I enjoyed taking charge, collaborating, and cheering on the wonderful podcasts to make them even more intriguing and professional as they already were.
School group work is one way that leadership is portrayed. Typically in most groups, there needs to be one leader or one moderator. The leaders take charge and make sure everyone is involved and on task.
I have played the lead role in a couple of my group projects and group work in my years of Journalism. Being online in 2020, it was hard to make everyone participate in the comfort of their home. I had developed some tips to make sure everyone participates, like splitting up the work and asking separate group members questions about the project or work.
In Media Arts, I did a partner beat semester, working on an article with another person, and we helped motivate each other and be the leaders. The next semester, I worked on a podcast alone, where I developed and brought leadership skills, responsibility, and motivation.
In Journalism, I had a joint podcast with Izaan Masud, where we rotated on the leadership roles. It takes strong communication to have a successful and working podcast. If I lead with the editing one day, Izaan would lead with finding interviews and choosing the movie we discuss, and vice versa.
In my 2022-23 year, though me and Izaan split from producing the joint podcast, I have continued with it. I still often look for advice from the wonderful and creative people who comprise of the podcasting team at Carlmont. Without them and my amazing editors, I wouldn’t have won all the awards that I have.
I have also been selected for being a podcast editor in the 2022-23 school year, peer-reviewing others’ work and I absolutely love it!
